Winter can take its toll on the entire family. This even includes your fur baby. From cold temperatures to snow, winter can be harsh on your pup. Thankfully, there are ways to care for your dog during the winter months if you follow these seven helpful tips.

Care for Their Paws

While you may don on multiple layers of socks and winter boots, dogs walk on their bare paws day in and day out. They may be accustomed to walking with nothing on their paws, but that does not mean the freezing temperatures do not affect their feet. During the winter months, it is a good idea to regularly wash your dog’s paws to remove any salt or de-icer they may have acquired on their morning stroll. This is also a good time to check on days when it snows in between their pads for any snow clumps. Along with washing their paws, you can also alleviate their paws with paw wax. Take paw care a step further by letting them wear booties.

Keep Them Hydrated

The summer months are not the only time to ensure your dog is hydrated. Your pooch can easily become dehydrated as an effect of you warming your home during the cold months. Make sure you check their water bowls regularly and keel them filled.

Adjust Bath Time

You may regularly wash your dog in warmer months, but you may need to decrease the number of times you wash your dog in the winter. The winter weather can affect your dog’s skin, and too many baths can easily dry out your dog’s skin.

Warm Bedding

Whether you have an indoor or outdoor dog in the other seasons of the year, every dog needs to be an inside dog in the winter time. It is okay if you would prefer that Fido not sleep in your bed. If that is the case, then you need to provide your dog with a warm dog bed and blanket to keep warm in the middle of the night.
